My improvisation skill is limited to identifying the chord and doing arpeggiated runs with my left hand. I don't know exactly how describe my problem, but I'd say that I have a hard time deviating from sheet music. My problem is that I'm not going the direction I want to go, and I don't know how to go down that path. So my problem isn't that I can't get better or hit a plateau, I know I'm getting better. That brings me to today of 9 years of piano playing. I hit a plateau after about 3 years of playing and it took me 3 more years to get a piano teacher to get past my plateau, which I got 3 years ago. for the first 6 years of my piano playing, I was entirely self taught with the exception of a few brief informal piano lessons from my mom. I ask my mom if she can give me piano lessons, but she says "You're old enough to learn on your own." As heartless as that sounds, she did give me pointers and helped me when I asked for it. That's when I knew and decided that I would have to become a pianist like Kyle so I can play the songs I wanted to hear him play.įast forward to the Monday after high school graduation. I always requested songs so I could hear his interpretation, but obviously he was getting a lot of requests so mine went entirely unnoticed. I really enjoyed his arrangements and interpretations.
I started listening to piano covers of songs i liked, and eventually found Kyle Landry way back when he was still at about 8000 subscribers. It made me fall in love with piano as an instrument. It all started when I heard To Zanarkand in my freshman year of Highschool.
